## About the book

Justice delayed is justice denied. Courts are backlogged, legal help remains expensive and out of reach for many, and rigid laws struggle to keep pace with the complexities of modern life. What if we could use artificial intelligence to fundamentally reimagine how justice works?

*Superjustice* sets out a new paradigm: harnessing AI technologies to transform law from a centralized, one-size-fits-all system into a dynamic, responsive framework designed for human flourishing. Moving beyond mere digitization of existing processes, it envisions a future where justice becomes a universally accessible service, legal gridlock gives way to responsive, data-driven solutions, communities gain real power through hybrid decentralized governance models, personalized law adapts to individual circumstances while maintaining fairness, and human wisdom and AI capabilities combine to deliver outcomes impossible for either alone.

While advancing a novel CRISPR-J (Cost-effective, Rapid, Inclusive, Smart, Predictive, Resilient Justice) legal framework, the book provides a practical roadmap for implementation. Neither utopian fantasy nor dystopian warning, it offers a well-reasoned and pragmatic vision for stakeholder collaboration that can transform justice from a scarce resource into an abundant one.

## The framework: CRISPR-J

The book's design standard for AI-era legal systems. Justice that is Cost-effective, Rapid, Inclusive, Smart, Predictive, and Resilient. J is for Justice, the point of the other six.

## The hard parts

The book does not wave the difficulties away. It engages directly with algorithmic transparency, AI bias and hallucination, data privacy, the digital divide, and the preservation of procedural justice and institutional legitimacy, and it introduces a Dynamic Challenges Matrix for working through the technical, human, governance, and societal dimensions of legal transformation. It anticipates resistance from entrenched interests, and a transition measured in decades rather than quarters.

Who it's for: judges and court administrators weighing what to adopt without ceding judgment; policymakers evaluating justice-system AI against public values; scholars, educators, and builders who want the institutional argument; firm and legal-department leaders tracking where legal work shifts.

Who it isn't for: anyone needing a practice manual, a doctrinal treatise, or a technical machine-learning text. A person with an active legal problem needs a lawyer or local legal aid, not this book.

In the same spirit: this website was drafted with the aid of AI tools, for structure, delivery, flow, and proofreading among other tasks. The judgments, and any errors, are the authors' own.

## About the authors

Samuel I. Becher and Benjamin Alarie have written on AI and legal systems since 2016. *Superjustice* is their first book as co-authors.

**Samuel I. Becher** is Professor of Law at the City University of Hong Kong School of Law and a Center for AI Safety AI & Society Fellow, with more than two decades of research on consumer law, contract law, and technology, and more than 100 professional and academic contributions published in various reputable journals. He holds an LL.M. and J.S.D. from Yale Law School and clerked for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel.

**Benjamin Alarie** holds the Osler Chair in Business Law at the University of Toronto. He coined "legal singularity" in the University of Toronto Law Journal in 2016, co-authored The Legal Singularity (2023, winner of the 2024 PROSE Award in Legal Studies and Criminology, 2023 Donner Prize shortlist), and co-founded Blue J, the AI tax research platform used at thousands of accounting and law firms, which he leads as CEO.
